The City of Melfort Diamond Committee has completed its three primary goals and along with Shore Gold is awaiting government approval of an environmental impact statement.
Shawn Russin of the Diamond Committee said that the primary goals were to inform the citizens of Melfort, facilitate business communication with Shore Gold and facilitate the growth of Melfort in preparation for employees coming in.
“As far as those goals go, once they start construction there is no more need for the Diamond Committee in the capacity that it serves right now, so we would have to change that capacity,” Russin said.
He added the committee will take on a new role as a public relations contact with the community and will address any issues that might arise over transportation and trucking of heavy machinery and equipment through the city of Melfort.
There are only about 20 people currently working at the Star kimberlite project. Russin explained that the Orion South kimberlite project has been put on hold in light of the recent economic downturn and emphasis is being placed on the Star kimberlite project. The project will employ around 600 full time workers when fully operational.
The provincial government is presently conducting an environmental impact study. Citizens can view the documents at the City of Melfort or on the provinces website until August 17, 2009.
The project is expected to take up three to four thousand hectares or about three per cent of the Fort a la Corne Provincial Forest.
Final approval of the mining project is expected to be granted in March of 2010.
