SEC has ‘straggler’ investigations from financial crisis, enforcement chief says
June 17, 2014, 11:58 AM ET
The Securities and Exchange Commission’s enforcement division isn’t quite done with its work related to the financial crisis, the head of the division said Tuesday.
“I think we still have a couple of straggler investigations from the financial crisis,” Andrew Ceresney, the SEC’s enforcement director, told attendees at The Wall Street Journal CFO Network meeting in Washington.
Ceresney added: “We’re not completely past it. But I think we are virtually past our work on the financial crisis.”
The enforcement chief didn’t name company names or suggest how far the investigations are from completion. But he said that the comparatively lightened load of probes related to the crisis has given the SEC greater room to focus on other issues.
“The good news from my perspective is that we have a bit of a luxury in the sense that we don’t have this burning issue that is out there that has got to occupy our complete attention,” he said. “It took a lot of attention for a number of years.”
“Now I think we are able to focus on a number of other areas, like financial reporting, like market structure, like insider trading,” Ceresney said. He called financial reporting and audit fraud “the next frontier” for SEC enforcement.
Ceresney also denied that markets are rigged, echoing comments by SEC Chairwoman Mary Jo White. But he added they are not perfect. “There’s lots of things that we are considering in terms of changes to the markets,” he said.
