ObamaCare 'Reform': 34% Fewer Doctors, Double-Digit Premium Hikes

Health Reform: Before ObamaCare, it would've been hard to find a health plan that combined a huge $6,000 deductible, few in-network doctors, and sky-high premiums. Today, thanks to ObamaCare, it's hard not to.

A new report from Avalere Health finds that enrollees in ObamaCare plans have access to 34% fewer providers than those who buy a commercial plan outside the exchange. On average, it found, ObamaCare enrollees had 32% fewer primary care doctors and 24% fewer hospitals from which to choose.

Worse, ObamaCare plans covered 42% fewer oncologists and cardiologists than non-ObamaCare plans.

What this means is that lots of patients will end up going out of network to get the care that they need, which means paying far more out-of-pocket costs.

Deductibles are steeper under ObamaCare, too. In ObamaCare's first year, the average deductible for a low-cost Bronze plan was 42% higher than before the law went into effect, according to HealthPocket. Deductibles climbed again this year and are expected to go up the next.

There's nothing inherently wrong with high-deductible health plans. Consumers who are more aware of the cost of health care are more likely to be prudent shoppers and hold down health costs, something that IBD has frequently pointed out in this space.

Indeed, the rapid growth of Health Savings Account plans — which combine high deductibles with a tax-free account to pay out-of-pocket costs — has contributed to the overall slowdown in national health spending.

But before ObamaCare, consumers accepted these high deductibles in exchange for very low premiums. In Iowa, for example, a $5,000-deductible plan could cost as little as $442 in annual premiums. Not anymore.

The average Bronze plan today costs more than $3,500 a year in premiums while imposing a $5,181 deductible.

And now insurers are pushing double-digit premium hikes for 2016, some as high as 50%.

Reporters covering the ObamaCare beat either ignore these trends or try to blame the insurance industry.

But this sorry state of insurance affairs is a direct result of ObamaCare. Its market regulations and benefit mandates are driving up premiums and deductibles while limiting choice. This is the glorious "reformed" health care system that ObamaCare has produced.

It was trickery and corruption, including the Cornhusker Kickback and the Louisiana Purchase, bribing Senators to pass the bill. Luckily, because it was passed using a budget reconciliation, only a simple majority in the Senate will be needed for full repeal.

The majority of the public still disapproves of the ACA. Even the Speaker of the House, Pelosi, didn't know what she voted for. The lied about nearly everything to get it passed. Millions lost their coverage and policies and doctors. Premiums and deductibles are skyrocketing. Access to medical care is restricted.

Many mandates have been delayed, and wait till more of the exemptions expire -- for the union donors to the Democrat party, the essential benefits still active in some states, and the Cadillac tax takes effect and the insurance company subsidies expire, and more illegals are eligible for free medical care.

There's only one thing supporters can promote and that is some poor people who now have insurance, but only thru mooching off others instead of paying for themselves. The ACA will eventually make insurance unaffordable except for the very rich, and we'll all need subsidies or go on Medicaid. It'll be a disaster.

They lied to pass a bill they didn't even read. It was passed thru deception.

Millions like me lost our health insurance, access and doctors due to ObamaCare. Now we pay triple premiums and 10 times deductible to cover moochers and coverage we don't need.

It's no different than taking food from me to give to the hungry and now making me hungry. It's immoral.

What people must understand is that the ACA is a tiered health care plan. Those of us in our late 50's to 64 will be paying 300% more than 20 somethings. Employers will have to scrutinize each new hire on "age discrimination" factors..leading to a new unemployable age group that will swell next year.

Physicians like myself will have a difficult time with deductibles of $6K per patient. Suppose only 20 patients on my panel run up costs to $6000 but cannot make the deductible payments. That doctor will be burdened with a $120k AR. An unsustainable loss. Many will go bankrupt.

everything above is so true. high high premiums, higher deductibles. my family has 4 doctors in it, in their 40's and one in early 50s . all are leaving the profession. one going to first love, animals. back to school for vetenary medicine. the damage that has been done will be long lived
