Emerging opportunities for businesses in Melfort were addressed at a Melfort and District Chamber of Commerce breakfast meeting on Friday, Oct. 19.
Jim Thiessen with the Made in Melfort committee gave the presentation about the emerging opportunities.
“We (Melfort) need to change from a retiree image to a family image,” said Thiessen addressing the identity of Melfort.
“We need to promote, ‘Live in Melfort, Work in the Region,’” said Thiessen.
Several emerging opportunities were addressed by the Made in Melfort committee.
The areas addressed include agriculture, manufacturing, mining and natural resources, retail, recreation and tourism, transportation and forestry. The committee also addressed health, education, housing and arts and culture. According to Thiessen, there are several opportunities in the agricultural sector in the area.
NESCO Meats and biofuels or ethanol plants are opportunities for the area. As well, organic and green initiatives in the agricultural area also present opportunities.
“We thought anything green would work,” said Thiessen.
The growth sectors include technical areas in mining and natural resources.
“Any technical trade is in demand in this area,” said Thiessen.
There is also a large demand for truck drivers.
“The next step for the Made in Melfort committee is we want to find out how to get out the two existing reports to all the business communities,” said Thiessen.
“After that, there’s a training report coming off. So, on (Oct. 24), our committee is meeting again to talk about that report and where we go from there.”
During the Chamber breakfast, the economic development officer with the City of Melfort, Perry Trusty, spoke about opportunities that exist because of Shore Gold.
“They want to buy locally but businesses have to make the initial contact with them,” said Trusty.
