Zachary Moran, a member of a prominent Las Vegas family, was sentenced last month to eight years in federal prison stemming from a 2005 indictment charging him with drug trafficking.
Moran, 29, is the grandson of the late Clark County Sheriff J.T. "John" Moran and the son of John T. Moran, a well-known Las Vegas attorney and former member of the Nevada Gaming Association.

Zachary Moran's federal case was sealed in the spring after his preliminary hearing was postponed five times. Without explanation, the proceedings and documents filed related to the drug dealer were closed to the public. His sentencing hearing occurred Feb. 12 but was not announced until Feb. 28.
Moran and his co-defendant, David Levy, were arrested Aug. 27, 2005, outside the MGM Grand. They were accused of attempting to sell drugs to an undercover member of the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency. The pair possessed cocaine and Esctasy that had a combined street value of more than $500,000, according to the criminal complaint.
Earlier that month, a confidential source established a relationship with Moran and indicated that he had out-of-town clients interested in buying large amounts of controlled substances. Moran was intrigued, according to the indictment. According to the source, Moran said he could provide large amounts of Ecstacy and cocaine and that he "had a desire to deal only in large quantities," the indictment says.
The informant also reported that Moran said he had met with Mexican cartel members in Mexicali and that his partner had Los Angeles connections who provided Ecstasy tablets.
On Aug. 15, 2005, the informant met Moran at the Western Cab and Limo Company, where Moran served as the manager. Moran provided the source a sample of the quality of drugs he could provide. The taste test included 1.2 grams of cocaine and seven Esctasy tablets, the indictment says.
A week later, the confidential source purchased 1,000 Esctasy tablets for $5,000. Again, the transaction took place at the cab and limo business, the indictment says.
They set up an Aug. 27, 2005, meeting during which Moran was expected to supply the informant with five kilograms of cocaine and 8,000 tablets, according to the complaint. Moran indicated that Levy was going to be present, posing as the driver of the limo Moran intended to use in the transaction, the indictment says.
When Moran and Levy pulled up to the MGM conference center, Levy hopped out and popped the trunk. He pulled out a duffle bag and handed it to Moran. The undercover officer met Moran at the passenger side of the limo. After confirming the duffle bag contained drugs, agents descended on the men, the indictment says.
Levy attempted to speed away, but agents jumped in front of the vehicle and forced him to stop.
An analysis of the drugs confiscated from Levy and Moran showed they were in possession of 6,027 grams of cocaine packaged in five bags and 2,081 grams of Ecstasy tablets that were held in seven packages. Levy's case is still pending.
