Why did Urban stop?
The Jarvis Drilling report (April 2005) tells us that 425 kg of core samples from Carolyn were sent for processing via caustic fusion. Only two microdiamonds were found.
I just got a copy of Newson's report (May 2004) on the Carolyn and he states that approx 423 kg of these samples were sent for processing via caustic fusion.
So we know that the info Jarvis had came from Newson. They both agree roughly 425 kg were sent for sampling.
Now, according to Newson's report, only Carolyn #1 and #2 were sampled via caustic fusion. There were Five holes drilled in Carolyn - #1-5.
So holes #3, #4, & #5 were not sent for processing, but Jarvis left this out of the Drilling report.
Now, here things get really interesting (to me at least) -
According to Newson:
Carolyn #3 DID NOT INTERSECT kimberlite - so there was no need to process this sample.
Carolyn #4
"The upper unit logged as ash fall tuff is unique in this writer's experience, and is not seen in the other holes of this program, even though they are so close." He states this sample should be tested for microdiamonds but does not state that he can visibly see any diamonds.
Carolyn #5
Both mudstone and kimberlite were seen in this sample. Newson states, "The kimberlite interstections contain enough medium to coarse-grained material that this hole should be analysed for microdiamonds."
Why didn't they sample #4 and #5?
Now, if one looks at what Newson wrote about #4, he makes it clear that this is a unique finding. If one does some searching on ash-fall kimberlitic layers, it gets really interesting. Especially what Diagem was reporting in regards to their findings in Brazil. Apparently, if such "ash-fall" is diamondiferous, you can mine this stuff on the surface; so it's cheap to mine.
When the kimberlite explodes, and it is diamondiferous, it shoots out diamonds with the ash. If you got the ash you got the diamonds, too, it seems.
Did #4 give evidence of an ash-fall kimberlitic layering? It had ash at the top and kimberlite at the bottom of the sample. I am not saying that makes it that, but it sure sounds like it.
Now, there was some old rumors about looking at some core samples and being able to visibly see diamonds...
If these were sticking in cement-looking material instead of darker kimberlite you just might be able to see them.
Maybe not.
But if you could see diamonds and you knew they were plainly visibly, and you knew you had the "goods," would you send them down to Saskatchewan Research Council to be sampled, so all kinds of people would know what you had found... Especially if you felt your company was under attack...?
Or would you hide them away in a "secure warehouse" until you got everything sorted out?
Newson concludes that Carolyn is diamondiferous and "the sample size is too small to say much more than this, but it is encouragement to carry on." He basically says the pipe has potential but they have to do a Bigger sample size.
He also concludes:
"Some of the kimberlite was not very magnetic, and the magnetic response may be caused largely by the particular phase of kimberlite. This indicates that the area of the kimberlite body could be larger than the area of the magnetic anomaly."
Remember Urban's magnetic versus nonmagnetic anomalies and what you might find?
So why did they stop sampling and drilling?
Honest, and this is just IMO but if Urban spent all those years getting these claims together how could he just STOP? You could say he got his two microdiamonds for the P/D, but come on, nothing would have stopped me (if I was in his shoes) to not explore the pipe he named after his wife to see what treasure it might contain. To me, this really looked promising. But WTFDIK?
Also, why didn't Jarvis mention the failure to sample the other known-kimberlitic cores and talk about the geological potential this pipe may have?
Or in reality, maybe he didn't think it was anything special...?
Or may be they did sample #4 and #5 and it was crap. Does anyone know?
Why did we never get to see Table 1 from the Jarvis report?
Who has the rights to Carolyn now?
JMO based on rumors, innuendo, and these reports.
